I'm a strong advocate of open space. Open space is increasingly recognized as a vital component of public policy. Protected open spaces, encompassing parks, recreational areas and preserved farmland provide substantial economic, environmental and public health benefits to our community.
Open space can enhance property values. Homeowners are willing to pay a premium to live close to protected open space. Studies have shown that open space adds to the overall value of residential home values. It also contributes to a higher quality of life.
Open space plays a crucial role in protecting our natural resources, supporting bio-diversity and mitigating the impact of climate change. In addition, if these lands were developed, we would be forced to add vital and costly services such as flood control, managing storm water runoff and improving air and water quality. Open space allows us to avoid these significant costs.
Open space provides opportunities for recreation, social interaction and community engagement, fostering a sense of place and belonging. Residents benefit from the recreation and exercise that comes at no cost. Open space allows residents to improve their health, both physically and mentally. Also, open space offers equal accessibility for all residents and promotes social equity.
For all these reasons, I support open space for Kennett Township. It's smart public policy.
